How much money should I
invest?
This is an important question, with two simple
answers.
If you are a beginner or just looking to have
fun, don't invest any more than is 'fun' to lose. Hence, if you're
comfortable blowing 50 bucks, put in $50 and see if you can win with
it. But I hope none of you are looking to 'blow' $50, instead I want
all of you figuring out what is safe as a bankroll so you can profit
the most.
Bankroll considerations are
important to good players. These types of
players are looking to consistently make money with the right
investment. If
you are one of these players, you should be able to bank 200 big
bets at the limit you play. Hence, if you play a $2-4, you should
have $4 * 200 = $800 roll. For $5-10, your target roll should be
$2,000. These numbers prevent you from blowing your entire bankroll
because of one bad run. Because even the pros get bad runs of luck,
and this prevents you from losing all your cash.
200 big bets is assuming you are playing longhand
games (more than 6 people at your table). If you are playing
shorthand games (less than 6 people) you might have more than 200
big bets.
Also, a very good idea is to keep a daily diary of your sessions.
This will help you know if you are a winning or losing player, and
how often you win/lose. This way you can judge how much to invest.
My preferred way to determine how much bankroll you need to play in
No Limit is 4x the buy in of your ring games (non tournament games).
So lets say you are playing at the smaller tables .10 and .25cent
blinds, the max buy in for these tables will be $25. If you play
here, your bankroll should be $100 (4x the buy in), that way you
should never blow all of your money away even on a bad run.
