Sandbag - Another term for slow playing.

Satellite - A tournament that does not award cash to its winners, but a seat (or seats) in a subsequent "target" tournament.

SB - An abbreviation for small blind.

Scare Card - A board card that can easily turn a winning hand into a losing hand. The classic scare card example is when you hold KK and board flops an Ace.

Scooting - Giving someone a small amount of chips when you win a pot. Also called horsing.

Scoop - To win both the high and the low portions of a pot in a split-pot game.

Scramble - A facedown mixing of the cards.

Second Pair - A pair with the second highest card on the flop. If you have As-Ts, and the flop comes Kd-Th-6c, you have flopped second pair. See "top pair."

Setup - Two suited decks, each with different colored backs, to replace the current decks in a game.

Sell a Hand - Playing a very strong hand weakly in order to disguise your strength and keep other players from folding. Also known as slow playing.

Semi-Bluff - A term coined by David Sklansky. To bet or raise with more cards to come when you believe your hand is currently beaten, but has a fair chance of improving into the best hand.

Session - A period of time spent playing in a poker game, normally measured in hours.

Set - Three of a kind when you hold a pair in your hand and a third shows on the board.

Short Buy - A buy-in that is less than the required minimum buy-in.

Short Stack - A number of chips that is not very many compared to the other players at the table. If you have $5 in front of you, and everybody else at the table has over $50, you are playing on a short stack.

Showdown - The point at which all players remaining in the hand turn their cards over and determine who has the best hand.

Shuffle - The act of mixing the cards before a hand.

Side Pot - The extra pot that is created when someone goes all-in. The person who went all-in is only eligible for the main pot, not the side pot(s).

Singleton - a card that is the only one of its rank.

Slow Down - To stop playing a hand as aggressively as it was played on earlier streets.

Slow Play - Playing a very strong hand weakly in order to disguise your strength and keep other players from folding. Also known as sandbagging.

Small Bet -In a limit game, the smaller of the two bets in the betting structure. Therefore, in a 10/20 game, each $10 bet is considered a small bet.

Small Blind - The position one to the left of the button, who is forced to pay a fraction (usually 1/2 or 2/3) of a small bet prior to the hole cards being dealt in Hold'em.

Smooth Call - To call one or more bets without raising, when you are quite sure that you have the best hand. See also flat call.

SNG - An abbreviation for a "Sit and Go" tournament, as opposed to a scheduled tournament.

Split Pot - A pot that is divided among players, either because of a tie for the best hand or by agreement prior to the showdown.

Splitting Blinds - When no one else has entered the pot, an agreement between the big blind and small blind to each take back their blind bets instead of playing the deal (chopping).

Split Two Pair - A two pair hand in which one of each of your cards' ranks appears on the board as well. Example: you have T9, the flop is T-9-5, you have a split two pair. This is in comparison to two pair where there is a pair on the board. Example: you have T9, the flop is 9-5-5.

Spread-Limit - A betting structure in which a player may bet any amount in a range on every betting round. A typical spread-limit structure is $2-$6, where a player may bet as little as $2 or as much as $6 on every betting round.

Spike - For the next board card to be a specific rank that you need to help your hand.

Splash - Tossing your chips into the pot, rather than placing them on the table in front of your cards. Splashing the pot is frowned upon.

Soft-Play - To go easy on another player at the table (e.g., not betting or raising against him). Suppose you and your brother are the last two people left in a hand. On the river, you have the nuts, but he bets. If you don't raise, you are "soft-playing" him. Please note that soft-playing is prohibited in tournaments and can result in penalties, up to and including forfeiture of winnings.

Stop-and-Go - A play where you call (rather than re-raising) a raise, but then come out betting on the next card.

Straddle - An optional extra blind bet, typically made by the player one to the left of the big blind, equal to twice the big blind. This is effectively a raise, and forces any player who wants to play to pay two bets. Furthermore, the straddler acts last before the flop, and may "re-raise."

Structured - Used to apply to a certain betting structure in poker games. The typical definition of a structured hold'em game is a fixed amount for bets and raises before the flop and on the flop, and then twice that amount on the turn and river. Example: a $2-$4 structured hold'em game: bets and raises of $2 before the flop and on the flop; $4 bets and raises on the turn and river.

Steal - To bet or raise causing an opponent to fold when you may not hold the best hand.

String Raise - A bet made in more than one motion, without the declaration of a raise (not allowed).

Stub-  The portion of the deck which has not been dealt.

Stack - The amount of money you currently have at the table.

Steal the Blinds - Preflop open-betting from the cutoff or button in the hopes that everyone following you will fold.

Steaming - Playing recklessly, usually as a result of a bad beat (real or

perceived). Also known as tilt or tilting.

Straight - in poker, a hand consisting of five cards of consecutive ranks.

Straight Flush - a hand consisting of five cards of consecutive ranks of the same suit.

String Bet - A raise that is not done in one single motion. The purpose of string betting is to call a bet, quickly gauge your opponents’ reactions, then decide that you’d like to raise instead

Stuck - Losing, often in regards to a certain amount of chips.

Suck Out - To win a hand with a hand that was a heavy underdog. This implies that the winner should not have been in the hand, and was very lucky to win the pot.

Sweat - Observing all or part of a session that one player is involved in, with their consent.

Suited - A hold'em starting hand in which the two cards are the same suit.

Supervisor - A cardroom employee qualified to make rulings, such as a floorperson, shift supervisor, or the cardroom manager.
